The measurement of corruption through surveys is widespread, yet it remains methodologically challenging. This upcoming seminar will present an updated version of the DATACORR database, which now brings together 3,468 corruption-related survey questions from more than 340 survey rounds.

Moving beyond the mapping of existing survey questions, the presentation will explore how accumulated survey instruments can support the design of new questionnaires. The speakers will introduce a benchmarking approach that enables researchers to systematically identify, compare and select previously used survey items according to their analytical objectives, target populations and conceptual approaches to corruption.

The seminar will feature Inês Santos Almeida, Researcher in Political Science at the Institute of Social Sciences of the University of Lisbon (ICS-ULisboa), and Gustavo Gouvêa Maciel, Research Fellow at the Institute for Sociology of the Slovak Academy of Sciences. Their discussion will be hosted by Luís de Sousa, Principal Researcher at ICS-ULisboa and an internationally recognised expert on political corruption, political finance and integrity.

About the speakers

Inês Santos Almeida is a Researcher in Political Science at the Institute of Social Sciences of the University of Lisbon. She holds a PhD in Political Science from the University of Aveiro and has worked as a Research Fellow at the Foundation for Science and Technology (FCT), including on the project “Morality Politics in Portugal”. Her research focuses on political processes, morality politics, party politics, public opinion and political corruption.

Gustavo Gouvêa Maciel is a Research Fellow at the Institute for Sociology of the Slovak Academy of Sciences. He holds a PhD in Comparative Politics from the Institute of Social Sciences of the University of Lisbon. His research focuses on perceptions of corruption and integrity, as well as methodological approaches to the study of corruption-related topics. He has contributed to initiatives including the Horizon Europe RESPOND project and the EPOCA project in Portugal and Spain, and his work has been published in peer-reviewed academic journals and books.

Luís de Sousa, who will host the seminar, is Principal Researcher at ICS-ULisboa. He is a member of IPSA’s Executive Committee and Chair of IPSA’s Research Committee on Political Finance and Political Corruption (RC20), as well as a member of the Editorial Board of Public Integrity. He has also served as Local Research Correspondent on Corruption for the European Commission and as Chair and Founding Member of Transparency International Portugal. He works internationally as a consultant on corruption control and political ethics regulation for governmental and non-governmental organisations.
